Duty Calls
Time to chuck my tuppence into the big conversation
Recommend chicken wire and forced sterilisation
For forty years I’ve watched the unwashed masses flourish
Rutting like ten-penny whores and whirling like a dervish
I’m not the type who fantasises
About history’s posthumous prizes
It’s just a random act of beauty
A boy about to do his duty
The evening cocktail strips the paint off of the ceiling
As the drunken wife-beater croons, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”
The local doctor takes his trousers down and mutters “turn and cough”
While the next door neighbours’ kids cut themselves in half with Chinese Kalashnikovs.
I’m not the type who fantasises
About history’s posthumous prizes
It’s just a random act of beauty
A boy about to do his duty
There’ll be no flower-strewn
Dressing room for me
Cause no one gives a damn
About those who stand up for they believe
I’ve brushed the cross-hairs clean of biscuit crumbs and tea-leaves
My trigger finger tingling neath its sheen of deep heat
I’ve cleared the basement of its homemade wine and gooseberry preserves
Cause cartoon TNT is all these Darwin nominees deserve
